Packing Tips

You should pack certain critical items with you.  Other items are less important, and can be packed in checked luggage.  Some items are only required if you are traveling to a hot or cold climate.

Don't pack too many clothes!

Pack with you (in a carry on case, not in checked luggage):
bullettickets (airline, cruise line, train, tour coupons, etc.)
bulletwallet/purse
bulletcash
bullettravellers cheques
bulletcredit cards
bulletidentification - government-issued, with photo
bulletpassport
bulletimmunization certificate
bulletbandaids
bulletAspirin/Tylenol/pain medication
bulletdeodorant
bulletcomb/brush
bullettoothpaste
bullettoothbrush
bulletdecongestant tablets/nasal spray
bulletmakeup  (limited)
bulletgranola/cereal bars / packaged nutrition snacks
bulletsmall roll of toilet paper (flattened)
bulletwatch or small travel clock
bulletanti-diarrhea medication
bulletprescription eyeglasses or contacts
bulletspare set of contact lenses or prescription eyeglasses (prescription sun glasses can substitute)
bulletliquid solutions for contacts
bulletspare set of underwear and sock/stockings/panty hose
bulletprescription medications
bulleta personal cheque (in your wallet)
bulletlist of contact phone numbers for emergency cancellation of credit cards contact phone numbers and addresses of the nearest national consulates (or alternates) for your area of travel
bulletlist of names, addresses, phone numbers of close relatives and friends.
bulletcopies of all receipts and invoices for high value gear you are taking with you, such as cameras, notebook computers, other small electronics, and watches and other small valuables. I don't recommend that you travel with too many valuables.

Know What Carry On Items Are NOT Allowed. Although disposable razors are allowed, security requirements prohibit passengers from taking certain items in their carry-on luggage:
bulletKnives
bulletCutting instruments (metallic or non-metallic), including box cutters and other folding or retractable blades, regardless of length
bulletIce picks
bulletStraight razors
bulletElongated scissors
bulletKnitting needles
bulletSome liquids - check the web for current list

Carry Photo ID - All travelers 18 and older must show government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver's license or passport) and airline tickets at security checkpoints and also before boarding.

Pack in checked luggage:

bulletSewing kit
bulletAspirin/Tylenol/pain medication
bulletshaving kit
bulletmakeup kit
bulletlaxative
bulletvitamins
bulletsmall quantity of laundry detergent
bulletplastic bags and twist ties
bulletsecond set of: contact lists
bulletSwiss Army knife

Yes, you should also pack clothes in your checked luggage.

Just remember, you have to lug this stuff around (unless you take a cruise).

Pack light. What does light mean? Mark Verber's Packing & Traveling Light Recommendations offers some practical advice.

No more than:

bullet2 pr of slacks/pants
bullet2 shirts/blouses (4 shirts/blouses if going to colder climates)
bullet4 t-shirts (2 t-shirts if going to colder climates)
bullet2 pr shorts
bullet1 swimsuit
bullet2 pr shoes
bullet1 hat
bullet4 sets underwear
bullet4 pr socks/stockings/panty hose
bulletI highly recommend 1 pr of pants be blue jeans or chinos, and 1 pr of shoes be sport shoes of some type. You should wear these when you depart, since they will likely be the heaviest garments you would otherwise pack.

Pack for hot weather destinations:

bulletwide brim hat
bulletsun block (at least SPF 20)
bulletinsect repellent
bulletlip balm
bulletsoothing skin lotion for sunburn
bullet(prescription) sun glasses with UV protection
bulletlong sleeved shirt/blouse
bulletcotton/linen pants/slacks
bulletsneakers
bulletsandals/beach shoes

Pack for cool/cold weather destinations:

bulletlined nylon jacket
bulletwool sweater
bulletgloves
bulletscarf
bulletlip balm
bulletwaterproof shoes/boots
bulletrain poncho
bulletPossibly more serious cold weather gear if you are traveling to areas where you expect snow and ice.

Pack for business trips (wear one of each of the first 4 items):

bullet2 dark business suits
bullet3 ties/scarves
bullet2 pr dress shoes
bullet4 dress shirts/blouses
bulletdress watch
bulletbriefcase
bulletumbrella or dark overcoat (for wet and/or cold climates)
bulletbusiness papers & materials
bulletnotebook computer or PDA
bulletcellular telephone
bulletlist of business contacts, consular officials, personal contacts

If you are traveling with children, take proof they are yours! Birth certificates, child's passport (or their names on your passport) are essential.  If both parents are not traveling with their children, you will also need a letter of permission from the missing parent.

If you are a multinational couple with children, be aware that your respective home countries may consider your children as nationals of your home country, and may impose local laws on you and your children upon arrival. Do not take your children overseas until you have carefully researched this angle!
