Laughing Bird Caye - panorama

Half day trip (9am-3pm) BZ$45 ea - 4 person minimum. Contact Lydia in Placencia for further information (Phone: 501-623-117)  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

ConradLaughing Bird Caye beachWe leave at 9am with Conrad and his boat, plus two others for Laughing Bird Caye. It is fairly rough going since there is an onshore wind, but we arrive about 1 hr later. Laughing Bird Caye is a small island about 200m long and about 20m wide. Panorama of Caye - approaching the island by boat. The island is alive with hermit crabs - all sizes - with all different "borrowed" shells.

(Conrad has passed away since we were on this trip, but his widow Lydia is still in the B&B business, and also arranges boat tours.)

There are lots of birds on the island, and I get some good photos, since they are relatively tame.

fish01.gif The snorkeling is superb on this Caye, and the water is shallow and sheltered. It is quite easy to get some good underwater photos with those disposable underwater cameras.

Conrad collects coconuts and throws them in the boat. He makes coconut oil out of them by shredding the meat, leaving it overnight, then skimming the milk off. He and Lydia prefer using coconut oil for cooking fish. She uses lard or shortening for baking, and butter for cooking eggs.

Albatrosses and Red-footed BoobiesLazy CayeOn the way back, it is just as rough as the morning trip.  Conrad shows us a few cayes of interest. We spot some Albatrosses and Red-footed Boobies in flight over their nests on mangrove islands. Lazy Caye is a very tiny island. It has a small house on it, and two small dogs, but there is precious little room for anything else! From a distance, it looks like the house is floating on the sea. Later, we spot some sea turtles, but they only pop to the surface for a few moments.

We return from the boat trip by about 3pm, and kick back on our veranda after taking showers and getting into clean clothes. As always with these sort of trips, one returns home covered in salt spray, and a bit fried by all the sun.
